This vehicle stands head and shoulders above just about any other wheeled heavyweight lorry the British Army has ever bought. First built towards the end of the 1940's by Thornycroft the 'Mighty' Antar remained the standard tank transporter for the British Army for many decades. As an ex tank crewman - they were always a welcome sight particularly at 'Endex' when we were collected for our our return to base.
The vehicles in Germany were crewed either by our Royal Corps of Transport or by displaced persons (mainly Polish) from across Eastern Europe who felt unable to return home and formed the BAOR Mixed Service Organisation. These cheerful guys were affectionately nicknamed 'MoJo's' and many was the tank driver who had to accompany their tank sat in the Antar cab with two MoJo's drinking vodka as they pushed the Rolls Royce Meteorite V8 Petrol engine towards an earth shattering 25 mph - some feat for a loaded vehicle weighing in excess of 100 tons!!
Sadly the days of the Antar were numbered and newer more powerful vehicles were destined to taked over and, like the MSO the Antars left service. But there are still many in private hands which show up at events and festivals. So, go have a look - amazing vehicles.
The picture I've sketched is of a Mk3 diesel powered vehicle collecting a chieftain tank from the Barracks tank park in Germany. If you wish, an RCT capbadge can be added with the Antar registration number changed or a unit capbadge can be added and the tank callsign and Squadron symbol can be changed.
