A total departure for a moment from my normal subjects. I was recently involved in illustrating some childrens books that are aviation themed - more about them on my 'Commissions' page tab. I enjoyed the work though very time consuming and felt I needed to try a watercolour of the famous Supermarine Spitfire. This picture shows a 'Spit' heading out over the English coast to head off approaching German planes as ground control give him the required height to reach in order to intercept the enemy.
As he climbs, the pilot still has his canopy open and is waving his white gloved hand in the 'V for Victory' sign as a show of confidence before the ensuing fight.
I'm quite happy at the results of what started as an experiment and hope you are too.
